Daizong Liu is the East Asia Director of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), with 23 years of experience in sustainable urban planning, transport, and climate policy. His career bridges research, practice, and governance, with a global footprint spanning Asia, Latin America, and beyond.

Since 2014, he has served as an external board member of Chongqing Urban Transport Investment Group, a vice-ministerial state-owned enterprise. In 2022, he was appointed Visiting Professor at the College of Architecture and Landscape at Peking University. Liu also holds numerous advisory and leadership positions, including: Member of the China Association for Science and Technology’s UN Advisory Committee on Transport, Chair of the Future Transport Discipline at the World Transport Congress, Expert Member of the Beijing Municipal Transportation Commission, Advisor on Shared Mobility to the Counselors’ Office of the State Council, World Bank TOD Project Advisor, Special Expert of the CAST “Haizhi Plan,” and Consultant to the New Development Bank on BRT projects, among others. In 2020, he co-led Chile’s national e-bus procurement initiative, which received the inaugural Global Green Finance Award from the International Finance Forum (IFF).

As a well-known public communicator, Liu’s talk “Complete Street” was named one of the top 15 speeches of 2017 by Yixi, China’s leading public lecture platform. In 2014, he founded the WeChat blog “CITIPEDIA” (一览众山小-可持续城市与交通), which has since become the largest independent media platform in China focused on sustainable development.

Prior to joining ITDP, Liu worked with the World Resources Institute, the Energy Foundation’s China Sustainable Transport Program, CPG Consultants in Singapore, and the Intelligent Transportation Systems Center at Southeast University. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Southeast University in Nanjing and his master’s degree from the National University of Singapore.
